Celebrity Dog Trainer Travis Brorsen

In 2008, Travis Brorsen and his canine best friend, Presley, were selected from more than 20,000 owner and dog pairs to compete on CBS’ national dog training competition, Greatest American Dog. With Presley only being 14 months old, producers felt it was unlikely they would advance past the first week. In fact, Las Vegas gave them less than a 10% chance to win after the first week.
Each week Travis & Presley were pushed to the limits and challenged in every way imaginable. Travis realized that if he created a positive learning environment for Presley and focused on building a bond and relationship with Presley they might have a chance. Each challenge in the competition was based on friendship, kindness, caring, compassion, respect, trust and loyalty. As the competition went on, Presley surprised Travis with his willingness to learn and obey. In the end, it was the bond they created through basic and advanced obedience that prepared them to beat all odds and become the winners and current title holders of CBS’ Dog Training Competition, GREATEST AMERICAN DOG.
Travis was a celebrity dog trainer in Los Angeles for more than five years. He has been published in many maginzines, newspapers and books all over the world. He then returned to Oklahoma where he was the head of instruction for dog training at Autry Technology Center in Enid, Oklahoma. He currently lives in New York City serving dog owners across the East Coast. Travis specializes in working with rescue dogs and helping you acclimate them to big city living!

Post Super Storm Sandy Updates

We are BACK at home on Peck Slip!!

Our Story

After two decades living in the South Street Seaport, Amanda Zink knew she wanted to give back to her community. Inspired by her beloved Great Dane, Tyras she opened “The Salty Paw”, the Seaport’s first Pet Emporium & Groom Spa. The shop quickly became recognized as a neighborhood hangout and awarded top groom shop in NYC.

On October 29th 2012, in a matter of minutes, all that changed forever. Super Storm Sandy slammed into Lower Manhattan filling the cobblestone streets with 11 feet of seawater, destroying everything in its path, including The Salty Paw and hundreds of other businesses and homes.

It has been a long road to recovery for all of the businesses and residents surrounding the South Street Seaport. We are excited to be MOVING BACK INTO PECK SLIP late September. Sign up to our newsletter to get the latest updates.

First and foremost we  want to thank The Seaport Animal Hospital for taking us in for the last few months. It has allowed us to continue to have a place in our neighborhood. There are several companies and vendors that have gone above in beyond in helping us that we want to acknowledge:

**UPDATE 3/22/13**

Much to our disappointment we lost the space we had been hoping to expand into. We are working to move back into our old space but it looks like it won’t happen til May at the earliest. We are discontinuing daycare services once we return to our original space. More updates as to our reopening date once we know more information. We are still working out of the Seaport Animal Hospital on Mon, Thurs, Fri & Sat until further notice.

**UPDATE 11/28/12**

We need YOUR help to rebuild! We are looking for a new temporary space for the next few months until we can move back into Peck Slip. Take a moment to make a pledge to help us rebuild. Please visit Lucky Ant helps The Salty Paw to make your pledge.  You will receive a gift certificate to use at our pop-up shop or our new temporary home.

Please follow our Twitter(@TheSaltyPawNYC) or Facebook(TheSaltyPaw) for up to the minute updates.

Our store manager is participating this year along w her 2 dogs. This is her story:

My first dog, Lacey was a rescue from the ASPCA. She was the best dog ever. She taught me about love, patience and acceptance. She was with me through those awkward pre-teen and teenage years. Every memory I have from a child involves her and I miss her every day. Our 2nd dog Candy was a rescue from Peru. She was my sister’s best friend and helped her through a dark period in her life. Our 3rd dog Daisy, a street dog who is still in my life. Her love for life (and food) make me laugh all the time. Ellie and Theo were both puppy mill dogs (without a doubt in my mind) and while I hate the fact my mother unknowingly supported them, they are amazing dogs. Ellie and her diva ways was with my mom through a difficult period in her life. Theo w his silly smirk and smiling face, helped me through my grief and sadness over losing Lacey. Bella came to us through a friend. She has blossomed into the most loving, affectionate, and healthy dog. She just aims to please and is a love bug. And lastly Teddy (And Mocha) the last 2 dogs we rescued; Teddy w his devilish, puppy ways has taught me to expect the unexpected. Each of these dogs hold special places in my heart. Each one of them could’ve ended up in shelters the rest of their lives, been homeless or worse. They are the reason animal rescue is so important to me.

RIP Tyras Zink

On Sunday May 8th we lost a very important member of the Salty Paw Family. Tyras, an eight year old Great Dane has been the face of our store since it opened. We are heart broken to lose him. He will always be a part of our store and hearts. He was truly an amazing dog and will be missed by many.
